BBKA Spring Convention 2012
April (20,21,22), 2012
Friday, Saturday and Sunday at at Harper Adams University College Campus, Newport, Shropshire TF10 8NB
The BBKA Spring Convention is moving...
The strong growth in Spring Convention delegate numbers in recent years has been good news but this growth has brought with it some problems. We have reached the limit of the space available to us in the currently used exhibition areas at Stoneleigh and the situation is even more pressing in the lecture and workshop/seminar facilities.
The Spring Convention Committee has looked at a number of alternative venues and has decided to move the 2012 event to Harper Adams University College, Newport, Shropshire. At Harper Adams we have available high quality lecture facilities, seminar rooms and laboratories. The on-site Regional Food Academy also enables us to offer some novel new courses to delegates. Good quality accommodation and catering is available on-site at reasonable prices. Additional accommodation is available off-site in local hotels, guest houses and B&Bs. Access is good from the M6 or M54.This great new venue provides enhanced facilities for the convention’s lectures and workshops.

Why come to President's Day?
By Roger Lacey, DBKA President
(originally published in 'Beekeeping')
'This is an annual event, usually in March, and has had an auction of equipment in the afternoon, usually on alternate years. So why come to President's Day this year?
Firstly, the Annual General Meeting of DBKA takes place on the day. This year, there are several vacancies to be filled and nominations should be submitted to the General Secretary as soon as possible. It is also your opportunity to express views and opinions about a voluntary organisation which now has over 1,000 members in Devon at a time when the general public is becoming aware of the environment and the part that honeybees play in it.
Secondly, it is a time when you can meet your beekeeping friends from the other branches and swap stories. You can applaud those who will receive certificates for passes in the General Husbandry and Module examinations, and discover who has the top marks in the Basic and receives a skep. The DBKA Downing Bowl will also be presented.
Thirdly, we have a speaker, and this year we are very fortunate to have Graham Royle NDB speaking to us. Graham started beekeeping in 1988 and started to study for the BBKA examinations in 1995 when he decided he wanted to know a lot more about the bees he was keeping. His studies resulted in achieving the BBKA Master Beekeeper Certificate in 2002 and the National Diploma in Beekeeping in 2004. He was also awarded the Wax Chandler's prize in 2002 and recently published the well received book 'Apis through the Looking Glass', an illustrated guide to bee anatomy through dissection.
He currently manages 20 colonies in four apiaries. His main interests in beekeeping are queen rearing and stock improvement having had some terrible tempered bees in his early years. He is heavily involved with the education of beekeepers at all levels from encouraging beginners to take up the craft, preparing more experienced beekeepers to take the modular exams and assisting candidates for the NDB examination at the advanced beekeeping course held each year at the National Bee Unit. He is also one of the team of five NDB tutors currently delivering NDB short courses as part of the Ferra 'Train the Trainers' initiative. He contributes to many magazines (see BBKA News - Jan 2012).
The title of his talk to us will be:
'If Heath Robinson had been a beekeeper'.
I do hope that as many of you as possible are able to attend.
I should also like to take this opportunity to thank those who sent me good wishes after my recent illness - this was much appreciated.'
Roger Lacey
